Why a satellite print works as a memorial keepsake
Some places hold a person for the people who loved them — the house they lived in for forty years, the harbour they sailed from, the village they grew up in. A satellite print of that place, dated to a time when they were there, is a quiet way to keep it. It is not a portrait and it does not ask anything of the room it hangs in.
- It commemorates a place rather than a loss, which many people find easier to live with on a wall.
- The archive reaches back to 1984, so a date from when they were there is usually available.
- It carries no religious or stylistic assumptions, so it suits most families.
- A digital copy can be shared with relatives who want the same image without a second frame.
Choosing a date
There is no expected choice here. Some people pick a date from the middle of a life rather than the end of one — the year they bought the house, a summer everyone remembers. Others choose the date of a scattering or a service. If the place matters more than the date, a recent clear capture is entirely reasonable, and the printed date will simply be the day the image was taken.
Sizes and pricing
Framed prints are made on archival matte art paper in a black frame, in 12×16", 18×24", 24×36" — $69 to $149. A full-resolution digital download is $6, on its own or added to a framed print.
Start your printFrequently asked questions
Can several family members each have a copy?
Yes. The digital download is a full-resolution file, so one order can be shared among relatives who want to print or keep it themselves. Additional framed prints can also be ordered separately.
How far back can the imagery go?
To 1984. Captures from 1984 to 2011 come from the Landsat archive at 30 m resolution, which has a soft, painterly quality. 2012 is unavailable due to a satellite fault, and there is no usable coverage before 1984.
Does the print have to show a date?
Each print carries the location and the capture date by default. If you would prefer the print without a prominent date, use the custom message field to set what appears beneath the image.
What if I only know the place, not a date?
That is fine and common. Choose any period when they were there, or a recent capture if the place itself is the point — the image will be accurate either way.
